U.S. Pushes Russia, Ukraine to End War, Says Zelenskyy

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed Saturday that Washington is pushing for Moscow and Kyiv to conclude the nearly four-year conflict "by the beginning of this summer."

Zelenskyy told reporters, according to Ukrainian media outlets: "The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer, and will probably put pressure on the parties according to this schedule."

The Ukrainian leader indicated that Kyiv recognizes "internal issues" within the US are influencing this timeline, expressing his belief the cutoff date stems from the approaching midterm election cycle in America later this year.

Washington has put forward an unprecedented proposal to facilitate the inaugural face-to-face session between Russian and Ukrainian negotiating delegations, Zelenskyy revealed, noting the encounter will occur "probably in Miami, in a week."

He additionally stated the US recommended both Russia and Ukraine reaffirm their backing of President Donald Trump's proposal to suspend energy infrastructure attacks, confirming Kyiv has already pledged support while Moscow remains uncommitted.

Zelenskyy's statements come after two days of trilateral diplomacy involving Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates capital, on February 4-5—negotiations that yielded the first prisoner swap between the warring nations in five months.

These discussions followed an earlier round of three-way talks held January 23-24, also conducted in the UAE capital.
